A glossary of terms used in ToME 4.
- Str, Strength
- Strength is used to determine how much you can carry, and how much damage is done by most melee weapons. It is the main prerequisite for melee weapon talents, and other combat talents.
- Dex, Dexterity
- Dexterity is used to determine how easily you hit an opponent, and accounts for 70% of damage done with bows and slings.
- Con, Constitution
- Constitution affects your maximum Hit Points and physical saves.
- Mag, Magic
- Magic affects spellcasting power, increases the effectiveness of potions and scrolls, and increases your spell save.
- Wil, Willpower
- Willpower affects your maximum amount of Stamina and/or Mana, as well as some saving throws.
- Cun, Cunning
- Cunning affects critical hit chance, and is the prerequisite for most of the survival skills (trap detection, etc.).
- Life
- Life represents your physical wellness. It works like Hit Points in many other RPGs. Damage done by attacks and spells is detracted from the Life of the target. Once the Life falls to -1 or below, a character dies. Life depends on the race, class, character level, and Constitution stat, and slowly regenerates over time (faster when resting).
- Fatigue
- Fatigue increases the costs of talents that use most resources like Stamina or Mana, but not all (like Equilibrium). Fatigue depends directly on the armour and equipment worn and is expressed as a percent. For example, at 21% fatigue a combat talent costs 1.21 times as much Stamina and a spell 1.21 times as much Mana.
- Stamina
- Stamina is used for many physical talents. Warrior and Rogue classes use this heavily. Stamina depends on class, level, and Willpower, and regenerates slowly over time (faster when resting).
- Mana
- Mana is used in spellcasting and related magical talents. Mage classes and hybrids like Arcane Blades and Shadowblades rely on this. Mana depends on class, level, and Willpower, but only true mages regenerate it over time.
- ...
- There are other resources used by other classes, which must be unlocked. However, if you pick up a talent from an escort quest, you may find yourself with a new resource to go along with it.
Combat Terms
The ToME combat system has the following attributes:
- Accuracy
- Accuracy increases the chance to hit an opponent. It depends on the talent Weapon Combat and in most cases on Strength and Dexterity.
- Defense
- Defense increases the chance that an attack from an opponent will miss. It is subdivided into Defense for melee attacks and Ranged Defense for ranged attacks, and both are based mostly on Dexterity and the equipment worn.
- The chance to hit an opponent depends on the difference of the Accuracy value of the attacker and the Defense value of the defender. If both values are equal, the chance is 50%.
- Damage
- The raw damage done if an attack is successful. It depends mainly on the Power of the weapon used, on the mastery talent of said weapon (e.g., Weapon Mastery or Knife Mastery), and on Stats mentioned in the weapon/arrow/shot description.
- This value is reduced by the armor of the opponent (see below), before a random number between this number and this number times the Range of the weapon is chosen. This is further modified for example by talents and critical hits.
- Armour
- Armour is the amount of raw damage that can be reduced once you have been hit. This value depends mainly on the equipment used, and on the Armour Training talent. See "Armor Hardiness" below.
- Armour Hardiness
- Armour Hardiness determines the percentage of an enemy's raw damage that your Armor (see above) can be applied to. With 30% Armor Hardiness you will always take at least 70% of the incoming damage no matter how much Armor you have.
- APR, Armor Piercing
- The amount of damage reduction from armor that is ignored.
- Critical Hits
- Some strikes may do additional damage. The probability and multiplier of such critical hits is determined by different factors (items, talents, cunning stat) but typically they will do 1.5 times the normal damage.
