Hey! This is my talk page!
===== Character Sheet transcludes =====

I mostly wanted to use transcludes for those topics because it cuts down on redundant information - your first point about people wanting to edit character sheets vs the individual pages is *why* I want to use transcludes, so as to not have to keep multiple things updated in case of changes.

That's true, re: the version number and headings, but the pages I'm transcluding are mostly pages that are very simple, anyway. Redirectiong /size, /accuracy, etc to the correct section of the Character Sheet page might be smarter, though.
You're making an addon. The addon is named "coolstuff". The first thing you do is make a directory "tome-coolstuff" inside your Steam install of ToME. On my mac, that path is:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/TalesMajEyal/game/addons/

And on Windows, it's usually something like
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\TalesMajEyal\game\addons

On Linux, the path is
~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/TalesMajEyal/game/addons

Your addons directory should have these files in it already:
tome-addon-dev.teaa
tome-items-vault.teaa
tome-stone-wardens.teaa

If you can't find the directory, search for one of those file names.

===Getting Started===

Every addon has an <nowiki>init.lua</nowiki> file. The <nowiki>init.lua</nowiki> file looks like this:

-- My Cool Addon
-- tome-coolstuff/init.lua

long_name = "My Awesome Addon"
short_name = "coolstuff" -- Determines the name of your addon's file.
for_module = "tome"
version = {1,3,1}
addon_version = {1,0,0}
weight = 100 -- The lower this value, the sooner your addon will load compared to other addons.
author = {'coolguy@invalid.com'}
homepage = 'iamsocool.geocities.com'
description = [[Oh my god this stuff is so totally cool.
Holy crap I mean it's really super cool, like, wow.
]] -- the [[ ]] things are like quote marks that can span multiple lines
tags = {'cool', "stuff", 'cool stuff'} -- tags MUST immediately follow description

overload = true
superload = false
data = true
hooks = true

''addon_version'' is (unsurprisingly) the version of your addon. This is used by the game for automatically downloading addon updates. It's also useful if players want to see which addon version they're currently using. Set it to {1,0,0} initially and increment the value when releasing updates.

''version'' is the module (i.e., ToME) version required for the addon. When making a new addon, you should typically set this to the current ToME version. When releasing addon updates, you should modify this value if your addon changes rely on features from a more recent ToME version.

Properly setting ''overload'', ''superload'', ''hooks'', and ''data'' is super important, because they determine which directories in your addon will be loaded by the game.

===Directory Structure===

* '''overload''': Files in this directory will automatically replace files in the base game. This is very powerful but also incredibly dangerous. (Of course, replacing things like icons is less dangerous than replacing code.)
* '''superload''': Files in this directory will be read and executed after the base game's file of the same name. This is very powerful but much less dangerous. This is a great way to add content (like new Artifact items) or tweak content (modify a talent's cost or requirements) without accidentally stepping on other tweaks or future content updates.
* '''data''': Files in this directory will just sit there and be ignored unless you explicitly tell the game to read them. Files in this area live in their own "namespace" and filenames here will never interfere with other addons or the base game. This is a great place to put new classes, talent trees, or races.
* '''hooks''': Only one file in this directory is automatically executed: <nowiki>load.lua</nowiki>. This file is a great way to get your "data" files executed at the proper time. It's also a way to augment some parts of the game which specifically support hooks: the Example module shows how the "Actor:takeHit" function is hooked to make the tourist take no damage. You can also use hooks to load add-on data in to the module, eg. new talents. Find a list of available hooks [[hooks|here]].

The Example addon can be found here: http://te4.org/dl/tmp/tome-example.teaa

A .teaa file is simply a renamed zip that contains the whole addon, so feel free to rename and unzip your favorite addon to see a living example of all the stuff discussed in this article. The <nowiki>tome-example.teaa</nowiki> addon illustrates how to add a new class, new talents, new timed effects and how to hook onto a few useful locations in the code. (Note that it's a bit old, though.) When zipping, make sure to zip the files but not the folder. For example, tome-addonname.zip/init.lua, not tome-addonname.zip/tome-addonname/init.lua.

You can also just put a folder 'tome-addonname' in addons and it will be loaded directly, no need to zip or rename.

== Grammar and Syntax ==
* The addon folder must be in the format <nowiki>[ModuleName]-[AddonShortName]</nowiki>. For you, that means <nowiki>tome-coolstuff</nowiki> is your folder name.

===Overloading===
Each <nowiki>.teaa</nowiki> file is just a zip file. The main ToME game code is stored in <nowiki>game/modules/tome.team</nowiki>, and it is also just a renamed zip file.

Copy <nowiki>tome.team</nowiki> somewhere, rename it to <nowiki>tome-1.1.5.zip</nowiki> and unzip it.

You'll see two directories: "data" and "mod". Most of the stuff you'll want to mess with at first is in "data".

When you use overload to replace a file, the path and name must match exactly the structure in <nowiki>tome.team</nowiki>. So for example, to replace the types of leather boots in the game, I'd look in the unzipped ToME code and find:
tome-1.1.5/data/general/objects/leather-boots.lua
... and so to overload that, I'd create a file in my addon:
tome-coolstuff/overload/data/general/objects/leather-boots.lua

===Superloading===

Just like overloading, superloading requires that you know the file structure of the game so you can make your files get read and executed at the right time. When the game reads in your superload file, you can get access to the previous file's contents using the <nowiki>loadPrevious(...)</nowiki> function.

For example, if we wanted to add a new boot ego, we could do something like this. First, we'd find the boot ego code:
data/general/objects/egos/light-boots.lua

Next, we'd make a file in our <nowiki>superload</nowiki> directory:
tome-coolstuff/superload/data/general/objects/egos/light-boots.lua

... and we'd make sure that our <nowiki>init.lua</nowiki> file had the line:
superload = true

We're ready to add the boot ego!
<code>
local _M = loadPrevious(...)

newEntity{
power_source = {arcane=true},
name = " of sensing", suffix=true, instant_resolve=true,
keywords = {sensing=true},
level_range = {1, 50},
rarity = 4,
cost = 2,
wielder = {
see_invisible = resolvers.mbonus_material(20, 5),
see_stealth = resolvers.mbonus_material(20, 5),
blind_immune = resolvers.mbonus_material(30, 20, function(e, v) v=v/100 return 0, v end),
},
}

return _M
</code>

====Modifying mod Stuff====

Hold on, that example still didn't use _M at all! So what is _M for? Since most things in the <nowiki>data</nowiki> directory are stored in easily accessible structures, you don't need _M to get them. _M is generally used for stuff in the <nowiki>mod</nowiki> directory: the most dangerous stuff to modify. Here's an example which modifies the "levelup" function in <nowiki>mod/Actor.lua</nowiki>. Your file for this code should be in <nowiki>/superload/mod/Actor.lua</nowiki>.

<code>
local _M = loadPrevious(...)
local base_levelup = _M.levelup

function _M:levelup()
-- Do stuff "before" loading the original file

-- execute the original function
local retval = base_levelup(self)

-- Do stuff "after" loading the original file

-- return whatever the original function would have returned
return retval
end

return _M
</code>

Daikara (or "the Daikara") is a second-tier zone in the far northeastern part of [[Maj'Eyal]], just south of the long mountain chain, and quite some distance east of [[Shatur]]. It has a material level range of 2 to 3 (changing to 4 to 5 after returning from the Far East).

Among the second-tier zones, Daikara is by far the most dangerous, due to the types of monsters found here. Don't let the 7 to 16 level range fool you; there are packs of snow giants with confusion talents, thunderers with ranged lightning attacks, boulder throwers with ranged physical area-of-effect plus knockback, cold drakes with cold breath attacks, wall-eating monsters, and many others. Cold and lightning and stun resistance are all useful here; confusion resistance starts to become noticeably important as well. Knockback resistance helps against the boulder throwers.

The layout is best described as mountainous, with narrow tunnels leading to large, irregular open areas. The entrace of each level is on the southern edge; the exit, on the northern edge. The levels are fully lit.

[[escorts|Escort quests]] may be found here. As of beta 32, escort quests are no longer generated on level 3 due to the [[Temporal Rift]] entrance, which appears randomly on Daikara level 3.

The standard boss is [[Rantha the Worm]], a cold drake with thematic talents (ice storm, ice claw, etc.), who appears randomly on level 4. This dungeon has an alternate layout (fire-based instead of cold-based), with the guardian [[Varsha the Writhing]] (a fire drake). After returning from the [[Far East]], the [[backup guardian]] is [[Massok the Dragonslayer]], an orc with [[berserker]] talents.

The random unique NPC [[Harkor'Zun]] may also appear here. This being begins as several "fragmented essences"; defeating these causes "the real Harkor'Zun" to be reconstituted. Defeating Harkor'Zun unlocks the [[Stone (category)|Stone]] spell talent tree (currently usable by [[Archmage]]s and [[Arcane Blade]]s).
==Description==
Yeeks are a mysterious race native to the tropical island of Rel. Although they are now nearly unheard of in Maj'Eyal, they spent many centuries as secret slaves to the Halfling nation of Nargol.

They gained their freedom during the Age of Pyre and have since then followed 'The Way' - a unity of minds enforced by their powerful psionics.

They possess the Dominant Will talent which allows them to temporarily subvert the mind of a lesser creature. When the effect ends, the creature dies.

Yeeks currently have only one [[race]] in their [[metarace]].

==Starting Equipment==
*Brass Lantern
*[[inscriptions|Infusion: Regeneration]]
*Infusion: Wild

==Starting Location==
Wilderness on the island of Rel, with access to [[Ritches Tunnels]] and [[Murgol's Lair]]

==Racial Talents==
{{:Yeek_(category)}}

==Strategy==

Yeeks start with a negative bonus to [[Constitution]] and have slightly less HP per level than [[Shalore]], making the earlygame slightly tougher. However, HP easily becomes irrelevant with +HP items (it is not rare to find +30/+40 HP items early in the game) and heroism infusions towards the mid/lategame. Yeeks also boast incredibly high [[Willpower]] and [[Cunning]], have an array of very useful racial talents (being able to reach confusion immunity with just one resist item and +15% global speed) and a negative exp penalty modifier of -15%, which allows yeeks to level much faster than other races, thus having more HP, and more options throughout the game and reaching their optimal configuration earlier.<br /><br />

Yeeks start the game in the island of Rel, in which two dungeons must be completed in order to advance towards Mainland Maj'Eyal. The first two dungeons may prove challenging to first timers, but can be easily cleared with classes that can utilize range and AoE, or are inherently tanky. It is recommended to head to the [[Ritches Tunnels]] first, since the enemies are generally weaker by dealing less damage and having less HP than the ones in Murgol's Lair. The general strategy for ritches is to use corners and corridors effectively (aka not rushing in like an idiot), having an enemy in front of a mob in a corridor blocks the fire ritches from attacking at a range and other mobs from dog-piling the player, making it easier to retreat and heal if needed.<br /><br />

After having completed the tunnels, Yeeks must head to [[Murgol Lair]], an underwater dungeon with relatively strong mobs with some mindslayer talents, making them beefier than those in the tunnels. Murgol's may also have an alternate layout where the player may encounter Nagas, which can utilize hard-hitting low cd talents such as {{t|Spit Poison}} and {[t|Mind Sear}}, as such it's not recommended as the first dungeon, and classes with a tough early-game may have a hard time. To make your life a little easier if needed, enter Murgol at level 1 and then leave for ritches to set it at its lowest level.<br /><br />
After having completed both dungeons, Yeeks will be able to access a third one, the [[Ruined halfling complex]], in which players will encounter [[Subject Z]], a boss so strong at this point that can one-shot the player with powerful talents such as {{t|Shadowstep}}, and as such, it's heavily recommended to use the [[Rod of Recall]] upon entering the dungeon. This will make players leave the dungeon onto mainland Eyal, giving them the ability to start on easier dungeons such as [[Trollmire]] and [[Norgos' Lair]].<br />

The one advantage Yeeks have in their initial dungeons, is, however, the absolute lack of rare mobs, making the progression more predictable and easier to handle by a lot of classes.<br />

==Introduction==

'''Zones''' are places you can go, containing NPCs (monsters and/or friendlies) and items. They are usually entered by traveling to a specific point on the wilderness map. They contain one or more ''levels'' (maps) connected to each other by stairs.

Items left on the ground of a level may vanish when you leave that level. There are currently three known exceptions: anything in a [[vault]]; the storage chamber of the [[Sher'Tul Fortress]]; and the special vault zone in the [[Embers of Rage]] campaign.

The denizens and objects in a zone scale to your level when you enter the zone, subject to a minimum (floor) and maximum (ceiling) defined for each zone. A common trick for some of the tougher zones is to enter them early in order to set the level scaling to a low value, run away, and come back later when you're higher level (or otherwise stronger).

Some zones are towns, which may have buildings ([[stores]]) as well as (primarily) non-hostile NPCs. Inventory in a town's stores are updated using fixed character/power levels at specific points in the current [[campaign]].

For the main campaign, these are: death of [[The Master]], and completion of the [[Charred Scar]].

If you are a newer player, you may wish to read this general guide to the [[zone order]].

==Continents==
The world of Eyal has three (known) continents: '''[[Maj'Eyal]]''' (West), '''[[Var'Eyal]]''' (the Far East) and '''[[Tar'Eyal]]''' (South).

Players in the main [[campaign]] begin on the continent of Maj'Eyal. Var'Eyal (the Far East) becomes accessible from the end of [[Reknor]].

Players in [[Embers of Rage]] start on an island off of the main continent of Var'Eyal. Access to the main continent of Var'Eyal becomes possible mid-way through the [[Embers of Rage]] campaign.

The continent of Tar'Eyal cannot be explored at the moment, but may become its own [[Campaigns#Tar'Eyal, the Southern Continent|campaign]] at a later date.

This is an old, out of date map, but interesting still: http://te4.org/w/images/6/6b/Eyal2.png.
== Description ==

Requires [[Embers of Rage]].

Orcs have a long and sad history. They are seen, and are, as an aggressive race that more than one time managed to imperil all of Maj'Eyal.
But one year ago the Scourge from the West came and wiped four of the five Prides. And a hundred years ago King Toknor wiped all traces of orcs from Maj'Eyal.
The orc race is dangerously on the brink of destruction. One wrong move is all that is needed.
But they are strong and will face whatever is needed to ensure a future of their own!
==Description==
Skeletons are animated bones, undead creatures both strong and dexterous. They have access to special skeleton talents and a wide range of undead abilities:
* Poison immunity
* Bleeding immunity
* Fear immunity
* No need to breathe
* Special skeleton talents: bone armour, resilient bones, re-assemble

Note: Undead are unnatural creatures and may not use [[infusions]] or be any [[Wilder (Metaclass)|Wilder]] classes. They do not gain the [[Harmony (category)|Harmony]] talent tree from eating the [[Heart of the Sandworm Queen]], but they may consume a corrupted heart to gain the [[Vile life (category)|Vile Life]] talent tree.
==Starting Location==

==Racial Talents==
{{:Skeleton_(category)}}

==Strategy==

Recommended Classes: Warrior classes, particularly [[Archer]] (bow); [[Archmage]]; [[Reaver]]

Not Recommended: [[Necromancer]] (can't use {{t|Lichform}})

Skeletons (like all [[Undead]]) can not be [[Wilder]] classes, nor access [[Zigur]] to become [[Antimagic]].

The racial bonuses for Skeleton make them very strong for classes that have synergy with those abilities. Classes depending on Strength and Dexterity - in particular [[Archer]]s - will benefit from the first racial skill. Bone Armour, Resilient Bones and Re-Assemble provide excellent ability to survive when raw damage and status effects are the problems. Passive immunity to poison, bleeding and fear are also good for classes that don't have strong abilities to reduce or remove status effects.

The primary weaknesses of the skeleton (and ghouls) are the inability to use [[infusion]]s. This makes them unable to use many of the best survivability options in the game - wild infusions to remove physical/mental/magical debuffs; movement infusions to provide quick attack or escape; and heroism infusions for powerful stat increase combined with near-death prevention. The Skeleton's large experience penalty will also make leveling slower.

Heat Beam and Biting Gale runes are an option to replace physical and mental infusions, but lack the ability to remove [[Effect#Cross-tier_Effects|cross-tier effects]]. Mobility skills like [[Rush]] and [[Disengage]] are useful options to replace movement infusions, as well as class-specific talents for mobility.

==Lore, from Dust to Dust==
What guide to the undead would be complete without mentioning the humble skeleton? Despite these clattering and chittering bones of the deceased often looking so fragile that a stiff breeze could break them apart, in many ways they are more dangerous than their ghoul cousins.

With no masses of rotted and ruined flesh to reanimate, necromancers can commit themselves fully to bestowing some level of fighting skill on a reanimated skeleton, and since a fighter's weapons will often last as long as his bones will, skeletons are usually armed and sometimes even armoured. The potential skill of a skeleton doesn't stop at melee weapons either - fallen archers take up their bows once again, and although difficult by comparison, some necromancers can even grant dead mages their magic powers once again.

Some adventurers find themselves baffled when it comes to fighting skeletons. How do you destroy a foe who, by all rights, should be destroyed already? To these adventurers, I say take heart. The more broken and incomplete a body is, the more effort it takes to keep it reanimated. As most necromancers see skeletons as the lowest of low peons, you can expect a few good blows to easily dissipate the minimal effort their masters put into creating them.
== Description ==
Highers are a special branch of Humans that have been imbued with latent magic since the Age of Allure. They usually do not breed with other Humans, trying to keep their blood 'pure'. They possess the [[Gift_of_the_highborn_(talent)|Gift of the Highborn]] which allows them to regenerate their wounds once in a while.
[[Trollmire]] (except for [[Celestial (Metaclass)|Celestial]], [[Chronomancer (Metaclass)|Chronomancer]] and [[Archmage]] characters)

== Racial Talents ==
{{:Higher_(category)}}

==Strategy==

[[Gift of the highborn (talent)|Gift of the Highborn]] (the first racial talent) scales with [[Willpower]] and is instantaneous. This can act as an additional or replacement Regeneration infusion and gives a boost to characters who may need some extra healing to survive. Even a single generic point here (for classes that boost Willpower but are tight on generic points) is useful. [[Overseer of nations (talent)|Overseer of Nations]] can let you hit enemies from outside their sight range (if you use it with an area of effect spell with range 10).

Highers are a solid choice for spellcasters (thanks to the damage boost of [[Born into magic (talent)|Born into Magic]]) and anything that boosts [[Willpower]] (to better benefit from the first racial talent). There are a few gimmick builds with Crystal Focus, but Highers are otherwise unimpressive melee characters. A few classes deserve special mention:

* [[Necromancer|Necromancers]] can use [[Gift of the highborn (talent)|Gift of the Highborn]] while undead and can mitigate their resource issues with [[Highborn's bloom (talent)|Highborn's Bloom]].
* Arcane [[Archmage|archmages]] can easily get the Aether Permeation [[prodigy|Prodigies]], which synergizes well with [[Born_into_magic_(talent)|Born into Magic]].

===Killing out-of-LOS===
Thanks to [[Overseer of nations (talent)|Eyes of the Overseer]] Highers can often attack enemies from afar before being noticed. Talents with achievable range greater than 10 include:
* [[Sun flare (talent)|Sun flare]]
* [[Devouring flame (talent)|Devouring flame]]
* [[Aura of silence (talent)|Aura of silence]]
* [[Gravity well (talent)|Gravity well]] and [[Gravity spike (talent)|Gravity spike]]
* [[Maelstrom (talent)|Maelstrom]], charged [[Distortion bolt (talent)|Distortion bolt]] and [[Distortion wave (talent)|Distortion wave]] (at talent level 1.7)
* [[Throw_bomb_(talent)|Alchemist bombs]] with range-extending [[gems]]
* [[Chill of the tomb (talent)|Chill of the tomb]] (reaches effective range of 11 at level 3; do not upgrade it further before getting lots of cold resistance!)
* [[Shadowstep (talent)|Shadowstep]] (reaches range of 11 after investing 5 points and 12 with additional category point in tree)
* [[Lure (talent)|Lure]] (becomes more useful after investing category point, which raises [[Trap launcher (talent)|Trap Launcher]] range to 10)
* [[Pulverizing auger (talent)|Pulverizing auger]] (have to raise category mastery to 1.7, e.g. with Wrap of Stone and category point)
* [[Wave of power (talent)|Wave of power]] (reaches range of 11 at 113 strength)
