Life is the most important resource in the game. It represents your physical well-being. You lose life when you are hit by attacks (weapons, spells, traps, etc.). You will die if your life drops below 0 unless are under the influence of effects such as a Heroism Infusion, allowing you to temporarily persist with negative life.

Most characters regenerate Life each turn. The amount of life regenerated can be modified equipment, and talents such as Fast Metabolism. Regeneration Infusions can greatly boost Life regeneration for a short time as well.

Larger amounts of life can be restored with various healing talents such as Healing Light and Nature's Touch. Many of these do not function on undead characters however.

The rate of life regeneration accelerates each turn while resting (pressing the r key in the default bindings).

On easy/normal/nightmare difficulties, your maximum life will increase by ((1.1 + Level / 40) * Life Rating) each time you gain a level, with a ±50% random factor applied to the Life Rating. The base Life Rating is 10, upon which class and race modifiers are applied. If the random factor is ignored, the expected maximum life of a level 50 character will be:

Expected Max Life = Base Life from Class and Race + 119 + 86 * Life Rating
