Zone Information

The Sludgenest appears on the main wilderness map of Maj'Eyal (in the frozen north) at character level 30 or higher, but not in all games. In each game, only one out of Dogroth Caldera, the Sludgenest, the Old Conclave Vault, and (if Forbidden Cults is enabled) the Scourged Pits will appear. This is chosen randomly, unless you are a Thalore and have not yet unlocked Oozemancer, in which case this zone will always be chosen.

Level 1 of the Sludgenest is a relatively normal forest area populated by jelly and ooze enemies. The entrance to the Sludgenest proper is somewhere in the middle of the level.

Level 2 is a maze of slime tunnels.

Level 3 is a small (15x15) area where you meet the Corrupted Oozemancer and several minions. Victory will unlock the Oozemancer class and grant the achievement Oozemancer.

Slimes from the walls

Every turn on levels 2 and 3, there is a chance that a wall tile turns into a new jelly or ooze monster and attacks you, so you'll have to keep moving to not be overwhelmed (unlike most levels, which permit you to fully rest up between each encounter). The chance per turn begins at 3%, which increases by 1% every turn that the chance does not occur, and resets to 3% when an enemy is generated. Only walls within 10 range of the player can turn into enemies. Enemies generated in this way give no experience or loot. The walls-turned-enemies get stronger over time as more of them are created:

  • Every 10 enemies, their level increases by 1. e.g. Increased by 50 after 500 enemies.
  • The enemies have a chance to be randbosses. The chance is ((X/10)^1.2 - 3)%, where X is the number of the new enemy. Chances are rounded to whole number percentages. e.g. The chance is 0% until around the 30th enemy, and it reaches 100% at around 480 enemies.
  • In the case that they aren't randbosses, they can be rares. The chance is (10 + (X/10)^1.6)%, where X is the number of the new enemy. e.g. The chance starts at 10%, and it reaches 100% at around 165 enemies.

Levels 2 and 3 have separate counters for spawn chance and danger level. Needs verification: Rounding, separate counters

There are a series of achievements given for letting increasing numbers of walls on the same level turn into enemies:

Achievement Description
Slimefest Have 100 walls on the sludgenest turn into hostile creatures.
Slime killer party Have 200 walls on the sludgenest turn into hostile creatures.
Mad slime dash Have 300 walls on the sludgenest turn into hostile creatures.
Don't mind the slimy smell Have 400 walls on the sludgenest turn into hostile creatures.
In the company of slimes Have 500 walls on the sludgenest turn into hostile creatures.

Version history

From version 1.7.3 to 1.7.4, if the player restarts the same character after death, or overwrites an existing character with a new one, neither this zone nor the other bonus zones will spawn. This was fixed in version 1.7.5.

Prior to version 1.7.3, this zone had a 30% chance to appear (100% if playing as a Thalore), independent of the other bonus zones.
