Music for Tome4

tome4

This page contains slight spoilers in regards to the different zones that exists in the game. You've been warned.

Rules
  • Must be legal (CC typically)
  • May not include words (though vocal sounds - orc impressions etc. are fine)
  • Can't be too edgy (ie. lots of people with varying taste in music must be able to listen to it) aka avant garde.
  • Heavy jazz, death metal, drum solos - hopefully you get my drift
  • Recording must be of acceptable quality (this vague, but it should be nice to listen to, not just "hmph ok")
  • Add more...?
Issues
So far I've got a few songs that I like enough, that are CC (attribution, non-derivative, non-commercial). I am unsure if non-derivative would include
  • Changing it to .ogg -legally clearly ok.
  • Changing it to mono, and or smaller bit-rates (for smaller file sizes) -legally clearly ok.
  • Using it in a game - not sure if the artists really envision this for their music initially, as some artists might not know of "free games" -dubious legality but often overlooked for non-commercial projects
  • Renaming it (though surely it would!) -legally an absolute no, and if this is done you will probably be asked to remove it from the game as with my comment on point 3.

This is a preliminary table for the tracks. I'd like a list of 2-3 tracks per zone (Different Zones can use the same music), but don't know if that functionality will be in the engine soon. Generally the music is of a high quality, and a lot will be suited to Tome, however that game may not want other projects to use their music (understandably so).

For consistency in the sound/music quality, I would recommend that we restrict the number of artists generally.

Other notes

http://javacrpg.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/javacrpg/jClassicRPG/media/audio/ a fairly big collection. Everything in this collection is CC of some sort. That game is a 3d RPG and is therefore only somewhat related to Tome. In terms of sounds I am pretty sure we can get most of it without making the games sound the same.
