Each Category Point can be used to
- Unlock a Talent Category that in turn enables learning of Talents
- Get access to a new inscriptions/runes slot (only twice). The exception is the Ogre race that may purchase an extra a third inscription slot.
- Increase the Mastery of an earlier unlocked Talent Category (only once per category)
The use of a category point is permanent and can not be undone.
Gaining Category Points
All characters will gain a new category point upon reaching levels 10, 20, and 34.
Other ways to gain extra category points are:
- Adventurers start with 7 category points
- Wanderers start with 3 category points
- The Cornac subrace of humans start with one extra category point
- In the main campaign Age of Ascendancy: Drinking the Wyrm Bile (dropped by the Corrupted Sand Wyrm in the Sandworm Lair after returning from the Far East) grants one category point
- In the Infinite Dungeon campaign: Characters gain a new category point upon reaching level 46 (in addition to levels 10, 20, and 34)
- Infinite Dungeon Challenges have a rare chance to grant one category point
- Each Font of Knowledge has a 0.4% chance to grant one category point
