Zone Information
The Gates of Morning is a zone in the Embers of Rage campaign. It is the same location as in the main campaign, but this time the player is an enemy of the Sunwall. Assaulting this zone is the focus of the quest The Deconstruction of Falling Stars.
This zone's first level is almost an exact copy of the Gates of Morning from the main campaign. The minor difference is a small rock passage/maze before the town proper.
The town's gate is initially blocked and guarded by High Sun Paladin Aeryn. Once she is defeated for the first time, the entrance to the town will open. Aeryn will invoke an invulnerability shield and retreat through the town, and into the caves at the rear of the town.
Warning: The player must let Aeryn escape to the cave before entering it themselves, otherwise she will disappear permanently and block further game progress.
There is a farportal in the town, in the same position as where it was in the main campaign. There is a nearby journal on the ground, which is a representation of a herald who emerges from the farportal bearing a taunting message from King Tolak and then retreats back through the portal. The player character will ignore the provocation and destroy the farportal after reading the message.
The next four levels are the Caves of Morning, and you must defeat Aeryn again on the final level. This time she has 35% more life and deals 35% more damage, and she is in a room with 8 of her troops. Upon killing Aeryn, the player will be granted the quest Hunter, Quarry, the G.E.M. will emerge on the world map outside the Gates of Morning, and the player will earn the achievement The High Lady's Destiny (Finale). All stores will also be restocked.
Can contain AAAs.
Effects of Completing Other Quests
If A Ritch Party has been completed, in levels 2 to 4 of this zone (i.e. the first 3 levels of the Caves of Morning), the caves will be full of newly-hatched Ritches that have tunneled into the caves. The Ritches are hostile to both you and the Gates of Morning faction. On each level, the game will try 30 times to generate a group of Ritches at a valid position, plus 2 times per the level number (so 34, 36, 38 times). Each try happens at a certain set of coordinates, which is random but not within 6 tiles of the map edges. For each try location, a radius is randomly chosen from 4 to 6. The position is valid if none of the tiles within that radius are stairs or "special" or no-teleport. At each valid position, a "quake" effect is applied because of the Ritches' digging (shuffling tiles around, in the chosen radius), and the central 3x3 square around the position will be dug out (with an impassible crack in the centre, surrounded by open floor). Finally, 3 Ritches will spawn within a 3-tile range around the position.
If A Ritch Party has not been completed, in levels 2 to 4 of this zone, each level will have 10 extra randbosses from the Gates of Morning faction (the Sunwall or their reinforcements from the Allied Kingdoms).
If Stargazers has not been completed, in levels 2 to 4 of this zone, the caves will contain sun orbs and moon orbs from the Sunwall Observatory. These are immobile enemies that attack with the Solar Orb and Lunar Orb talents, respectively. The total number of defense orbs that each level contains is equal to 8 plus 3 times the level number (so 14, 17, 20 orbs).
If both A Ritch Party and Stargazers were not completed, when the player kills Aeryn, they will earn the achievement An Other Brick in the Wall.
Zone Specific Artifacts
- Ring of Lost Love - dropped by Aeryn. Needs to be kept in inventory when returning to world map in order to spawn Crimson Templar John and make Cave of Hatred accessible.
