The Internment Camp is a zone in the Embers of Rage campaign. It is used by the Sunwall and their western allies to hold all of the remaining orcs on the mainland of Var'Eyal, who they have captured. Mindwall uses his psionic powers to project calming illusions and keep the orcs subdued and obedient. The orcs are also guarded by ogres from Elvala, hired by the Allied Kingdoms. Rescuing the orcs is the goal of the quest Children of Garkul, Unite!
This zone starts with the entrance area from the main map, called Strange Clearing, with no visible exits other than the way in. It initially appears as an idyllic forest. The boss, Mindwall, is encountered alone in this area. Mindwall's psionic powers allow him to repeatedly confuse the player, without checking confusion immunity or any saves. In order to resist this confusion, the player needs to wear the Cap of the Undisturbed Mind. Acquiring this cap is one of the goals of the Stargazers quest, hence why the player is advised to complete that quest first. (However, it is possible to defeat Mindwall without wearing the cap.) When the player kills Mindwall's body, his mind lives on and splits up, taking direct control of all the subdued orcs. With the body dead, Mindwall's will falters and the illusion is dispelled, revealing the squalid reality. This reveals exits to further sections, one for each of the four captured Orc Prides (Rak'Shor Pride east, Vor Pride north, Gorbat Pride south, Grushnak Pride west). These exits are at the edges of the map. Unlike other zones, the player can visit these four sections (levels) in any order.
Each of the sections is filled with mind-controlled orcs from the corresponding Pride, as well as ogre guards, and a Mindcontrol Pillar on the far side from the entrance. The orcs in those zones will be themed to the pride (wyrmic, mage, melee...) and will initially be hostile. Destroying the Mindcontrol Pillar will cause all the orcs in the section to be freed from the mind control, and they will stop attacking the player, and potentially start attacking any remaining ogres. The orcs in this zone deal 60% less damage and have 25% less life, even after the mind control is broken.
Upon destroying all four Mindcontrol Pillars and thereby freeing all the orcs, the quest Children of Garkul, Unite! is complete, and the player earns the achievement Reclaiming Garkul's Heritage. If the player did not kill a single mind-controlled orc, they also earn the achievement True Savior. (This includes not killing orcs after freeing them.)
The first time you complete this zone, you will randomly either unlock the Mage or Rogue metaclass for use in the Embers of Rage campaign. (You can play as the classes from that metaclass that you have already unlocked in the main ToME campaign, as well as ones you unlock in the future.) The next time you complete it on a new character, you will unlock the other metaclass out of Mage and Rogue. The third time you complete it on a new character, you will unlock all the metaclasses (that you have unlocked in the main campaign) for use in Embers of Rage.
