I've been starting characters in Roguelike instead of Adventure mode, since I felt I was getting sloppy with the extra lives. Well, I'm still getting sloppy, as Sparky the Shalore Archmage can attest.
Confronted by Wrathroot at the bottom of the Old Forest, I managed to hit him with a Flameshock to stun him for what, two turns? Except that you can only use one of those turns. Put two attacks in a row and the big # gets to move after your second turn. And then it was freeze, and then Stun, and hit and hit and then freeze again and poor Sparky is history.
Part of the problem was not maxxing the big three attack spells: Flame, Lightning and Manathrust. I knew I wasn't putting out enough damage, I should have gone grinding levels until I had at least Flame and Lightning maxxed.
Second part of the problem was I didn't try to Freeze W or teleport away again instead of hitting him with that last Manathrust. I knew it wasn't going to kill him, and I know about the 'one less safe turn' for stun duration. But I wasn't thinking ahead.
Third part of the problem, I was impatient. I had already teleported off one time and he was almost completely regenn'ed before he found me again. So I thought I would risk one more hit. Whoops.

I hate Wrathroot. He just
I hate Wrathroot. He just pretty much oneshotted my Level 12 Berserker with a freeze-stun-knockback combo. Seriously, I was on full health beforehand, and I had absolutely no chance to react. No turns to do anything. 300+ HP with maxed Fast Metabolism. It was my last life too :'(
And if it's not Wrathroot it's the Minotaur...
Id recommend adding 5-10
Id recommend adding 5-10 levels before confronting any of the "beginner" area bosses in b20. (So around level 17-27). Been busy playing Elona lately so haven't been playing b20 much but it seems much much harder than previous tomes and the frustration level spiked a bit, so I am waiting until the shops situation gets fixed at least (though not holding my breath) before I get back into this again.
Bosses are a serious threat,
Bosses are a serious threat, even if all the "mooks" in the dungeon up to that point are just cannon fodder. The worst mooks in the old forest are the snake pits, and they're just a matter of not getting mobbed in the open and keeping an eye on your regen. Wrathroot is a whole order of magnitude more difficult, especially if he's got regen.
A simple rule of thumb
Survival over damage.
If you have the choice to wear an item that gives stun resist or saving throw bonuses or one that increases your damage go for the former. Also 300 hit points seems kinda low for a berserker at that level. You should be investing in Con and the health talents already (zerkers really have no better place for stats then strength and con and this is part of the reason they're an easy mode class).
So no, bosses don't need to be toned down pteriforever. Your play style needs to be adjusted. An old adage I used to tell the dpsers in my WoW guild. You do no damage when you're dead.
Actually, I've realised that
Actually, I've realised that bosses aren't that hard if you use Stunning Blow continuously. Usually I put lots in CON, but in that particular game I put a disproportionally large amount in STR so I could use the stralite greatmaul I picked up really early. I'm really a sucker for the fast-regen talents, too, and I tend to max them out as soon as I'm done maxing the basic two attacks.
