I just checked with lsof on my macbook running 10.6.8 and it's using libraries installed with MacPorts:
    /opt/local/lib/libz.1.2.7.dylib
    /opt/local/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib
    /opt/local/lib/libiconv.2.dylib
    /opt/local/lib/libbz2.1.0.6.dylib
    /opt/local/lib/libvorbis.0.dylib
    /opt/local/lib/libogg.0.dylib

I don't know why, they aren't directly linked by T-Engine (for what otool -L says)

  • Tales of Maj'Eyal beta41 aka "Flash of the blade"   13 years 34 weeks ago

That doesn't work on either of my computers running 10.7. There are still many many missing libraries.

  • Tales of Maj'Eyal beta41 aka "Flash of the blade"   13 years 35 weeks ago

    Put T-Engine.app in /Applications, open a shell ( Terminal.app ) and type:
    sudo ln -s /Applications/T-Engine.app/Contents/Frameworks/libSDL2-2.0.0.dylib /usr/local/lib/
insert your password when asked and try again to run T-Engine.app

A different way is to show the contents of T-Engine.app , in Contents->Frameworks you'll find libSDL2-2.0.0.dylib , copy it in /usr/local/lib and run T-Engine.app

You could install Wine and run the Windows version on Mac like I use Wine to run the Windows version on Linux.

It will work and there are barely any bugs or graphical glitches from being run on Wine. Wine almost fully supports Lua so you've got nothing to worry about.

  • Tales of Maj'Eyal beta41 aka "Flash of the blade"   13 years 35 weeks ago

Unfortunately, the program crashes initially on my mac thus I still stick with b40 :(

  • Tales of Maj'Eyal beta41 aka "Flash of the blade"   13 years 35 weeks ago

Additionally. The font works well on the Droid because the droid has a ~4" screen, so big bold letters are more legible. But when viewed on a 19+ inch screen it's functionality stops.

Can you please add an option to change the new Level-Up screen back to the original. The new layout + graphics only are really confusing when you're use to the old text-based layout. It took me about 3 times as long to do the first level up for a new character. And having an option to change the font back to the original would help. The new font is too "bold" and kerned to closely that the words blend together when you read them. The old font was much more legible.

Appreciate all the work that goes into making TOME the major draw of my spare time, but . . . "Anorithil escorts do not provide Providence but Healing Light (you can still learn the tree if you need providence)"
Providence is the best escort award available IMO, I often risk losing a life to complete the escort--and immensely enjoy the benefit when successful. Not sure how you can still learn the tree to get providence, but guess I will have to find out.

I've been away from ToME for way too long, first it was work, and then it was two weeks vacation -- meaning that I barely played b40 at all. Finally got back home yesterday, and reading this changelog I feel like taking 3 or 4 days off from socializing altogether (friends and family can wait, right?) ;p

It's mostly the small-ish changes that are appealing to me, just to briefly mention a few:

    - Updated SDL for, hopefully, a better support of windows7
-- even though you say "hopefully" I feel optimistic about this. The random crashes and stuff were always the only huge flaw in ToME for me

    - Weapon Mastery, Knives Mastery, Exotic Mastery and Combat Accuracy now have only 5 levels instead of 10 (scale end benefi, just spread over less points). So melee classes will have more generic points for "other" toys
-- This is actually awesome, and I think it's gonna make for some more variety in race/class combos

    - Object tiers on tooltips is convenient (why didn't anyone think of this earlier? :P)

    - the changes to rand elites all seem like improvements, I didn't play enough to really get a feel for the flaws addressed here, but they seem good anyways.

    - Changes to Halflings: THANK YOU. I hated the waste of potential that they were earlier, now they actually seem interesting and I'm gonna have to play one right away :D

    - Changes to Highers: The changes seem good, they were never as bad as halflings imo but this is still a step in the right direction.

    - New "events" system, sometimes .. things happen
-- this sounds exciting, and it would add some very welcome variation to the zones we're all so familiar with. Can't wait to run across some of these :D

The other changes are also all good, but those were the ones that caught my eye first. I'll leave another message with some feedback when I've played around for a day or two. Everything seems spot on though, so even after playtesting it it's probably still gonna be praise ^^

As always, huge thanks for your work, I appreciate it immensely!

    Regards,
    TehRei

  • Highers   13 years 35 weeks ago

I like to think that ToME4's approach to racism is a little more mature than Battlefield 3's.

  • Highers   13 years 36 weeks ago
    .

Considering any RPG race racist in real world context is absurd.

Its like in fallout games where humans consider themself superior above all, supermutants consider themself above humans, ghouls are just target for extermination for most humans groups. Even thougha ll of them are/were humans at some time. Hell few ghouls were borned to "normal" human or been created trough local radiation.

Did any fallout game got baned for this straight out played racism ?
Nope cause it does not strive to be real world simulator, its just a game.

And yes from time to time some random ppl acuse some random game from racism but it never goes past one headline.

[Last what I remember was Battlefield 3 for making standart grunt [asault/medic] template being Afro-American.]

I've used Paradox Clone a few times, and didn't really notice anything. What's spoilery?

The Car may be gone but the most important thing is that he survived. Life is more important than a vehicle which gets you to places quickly. There is so much more to life than people think, which is why i hate it when i hear of people committing suicide and ending their life before they get a chance to experience the joys and wonders of the world.

Glad he survived. I've not got a lot of words to say but, to the guy who nearly died in the accident (Who is also the developer of my #1 favourite game in the world which is ToME): good luck and heal up. Drink a hot cup of Tea while dunking biscuits in the tea and enjoy a video game or movie. Great way to relax. :)

Try to take a break from development and rest and remember, every living being has many reasons to live and you developing games is only a small reason. The biggest reason is to be a part of this world and you living and caring for all your family and friends and relatives gives you the biggest purpose in the world that many of us carry.

    Keep on living, dude! :)

Keep in mind that in the opening chapter of the Analysis of the Races we are given Loremaster Greynot's assurances that as a Higher human he would attempt to remain neutral - the hint here is he does not. He is disparaging towards Cornacs and praising of Highers. The lore itself is not to be trusted, as also follows with the lore from the halfling, Rhaloren, orc and Zigur perspectives.

Also note that the socio-economic differences as well as the biological differences will have an effect on both races. Cornacs tend to have less wealthy and educated upbringings compared with Highers. But harder lives make them more adaptable (hence the category point and lower experience requirement).

The Higher "special powers" are mostly biological (due to magic blood and selective breeding), but they're for gameplay purposes. If Highers were gameplay wise identical to Cornacs there'd be no reason for them to exist in game. For the same reason the other humans races mentioned in the lore can't be played - there is no gameplay imperative for them. And generally the Cornac power is considered superior to the Higher special abilities, with most players choosing Cornacs over Highers. The social situation in the game declaring Highers as better is partly a lot of hot air enforced by discrimination.

I'll give some thought to adding some more lore to balance out the opinion of Cornacs. So far my main concentration has been on emphasising the racial divides between the other species.

DG, I'm not sure that what you skidded on was grass. Sounds more like a slippery rock to me. (I'm sorry, but I /had/ to get you back for all those fragile Insane mode characters wrecked by those silly traps.)

I can totally feel you about the shoes, btw--there's nothing like a good pair of suede shoes, but they're maimed by the slightest drop of water. Count your blessings if they escaped unscuffed.

Do get well! Oh, and play some twitch games once in a while, not just roguelikes.

    Bug

I've noticed when one of your summons die, they remain in your party menu, clogging it up.

  • Ruined Dungeon   13 years 42 weeks ago

There are only three clues, but there are two "elements" mentioned in each.
When you click on a orb you get something like "a fire is burning inside" etc.

Anyways, the order is like this:

    Water -> Dust -> Wind -> Seed -> Magic -> Fire

Click yes on the orbs in that order and the door will open.

I'm not sure where on the wiki info like this would go, so someone who knows better can feel free to repost/move this there.

The basic steps that worked for me in Xubuntu 12.04 (Precise):
    1. Download the lastest package's "Linux" version.
    2. Unzip/untar the downloaded .tar.bz2 file.
    3. Optionally move the t-engine4 directory to somewhere convenient, like your home directory.
    4. Locate and Execute the t-engine binary file to start having fun.

If you're using normal Ubuntu (specifically, with Unity) you might have to adjust the windows-and-icons bit below a little. I'm using xubuntu specifically to avoid Unity, my knowledge of how it works is at the very-beginner level.

More detailed info for windows-and-icons users:
    • You can unzip untar the downloaded file by finding it in your Downloads directory (probably something like /home/(yourusername)/Downloads/t-engine4-linux32-1.0.0beta40.tar.bz2) and selecting Extract Here from the context menu. You only need to do this once per release.
    • Look in your newly created t-engine4 directory (something like 't-engine4-linux32-1.0.0beta40') and double click the file t-engine to execute it.
More detailed info for command-line users:
    • Open a command line, cd to your Downloads directory, and use t-engine4-linux32-1.0.0beta40.tar.bz2 ; tar xvf t-engine4-linux32-1.0.0beta40.tar to unpack the .tar.bz file you downloaded. You only need to do this once per release.
    • cd t-engine4-linux32-1.0.0beta40 to move get into the new directory, ./t-engine to start playing.

    I am a total Ubuntu/Linux neophyte.

I would like to see an entry decribing in detail what steps I should follow from the time I download the LInux tarball from the site. I also need to know how to run the program once it is unzipped into the correct place

    Thank you
