Upon death while wearing the Fanged Collar, the player will have the option to revive using the Collar. (The collar can only revive the player once.) If they do so, the Collar will reveal itself as a Parasite, and the parasite will replace the player character's head, inheriting their memories and sense of self but sometimes taking over with the parasite's own will and hunger.
Parasite is not a real race (it does not change the player's descriptor.race or descriptor.subrace, and it doesn't have a birth descriptor), it is just a racial talent tree and a collection of effects:
- You keep your former invested racial talents and also the race bonuses (e.g. attribute; life-rating; Cornac bonuses), but cannot invest anymore into your old racial talent tree
- You cannot change their amulet to anything but the fanged collar
- You cannot equip headgear and lose the currently equipped one
- In many conversations with NPCs, the parasite will be hungry, which replaces the all normal dialog options with a single option to eat the NPC, killing them and gaining +1 generic talent point. This applies to the following NPC conversations:
- Melinda, when talking to her at the Sher'Tul Fortress.
- Fallen Aeryn, after defeating her on floor 10 of the High Peak.
- Slasul, any conversation. Unlike the other cases here, Slasul does not instantly get eaten - the player must fight him.
- Any escort, at the start of the escort quest.
- When talking to the Assassin Lord, the parasite will eat the captured merchant and side with the Assassin Lord.
- Fillarel, in the Unremarkable Cave.
- The Yeek Wayist in the Ruined Halfling Complex, after "saving" him from Subject Z.
- Similarly, when aiming Destructicus, the parasite will force the player to shoot down the Steam Giant Airship, because the parasite loves death and pain.

Strategy
Being a Parasite means sacrificing your head slot and permanently wearing the fanged collar in exchange for a new racial tree. That means, of course, that you also need to have leftover generic points. You lose the ability to put more points into your racial traits, though you do retain the talents themselves. The best time to change, if you can help it, is after you've completed all of your escort missions, due to the fact that the parasite is always hungry and will consume the escorts, resulting in automatic failure.
You can go Cornac -> Parasite -> Lich, keeping all their bonuses.
