    I was talking about. :P

As far as "policing" racism on the Internet, I'm just voicing my ideas on how to improve the game and why. I'm not trying to accuse anyone of anything, let alone arrest them. I don't believe DarkGod has any racist tendencies; I think the shared history of halflings and humans on Maj'Eyal can attest to that. It was exactly that story that inspired my intial post.

As far as "it being okay because they're elves," the story of the prejudice against the drow is all in the narrative already, which is exactly what I'm advocating for the humans in Maj'Eyal. In terms of the narrative itself, we have to draw the line somewhere where racism is concerned, and for the fantasy genre the line was drawn by Tolkien himself, when he declared in the opening to Fellowship that Middle Earth was not to be taken as an allegory for the modern world, specifically referring to issues of race and international relations. We can draw a similar line for Maj'Eyal, but in the process we should adhere to the level of distinction that Tolkien himself employed. Tolkien said that some Men were born superior to others, but vehemently denied that such was the case with human beings. What's wrong with us doing the same?

    >Dwarves are based on ancient Germanic legends of dwarfs, a species of fairy. They were not human beings, and have nothing to do with Verne Troyer or any other dwarves in real life.

So it's not racism because it's fantasy fiction?

You just defeated your own argument. Congratulations.

  • Highers   14 years 12 weeks ago

Dwarves are based on ancient Germanic legends of dwarfs, a species of fairy. They were not human beings, and have nothing to do with Verne Troyer or any other dwarves in real life.

Moreover, just because a race is "nonhuman" doesn't mean it's "subhuman." The only one who's using that word is you, belmarduk, and you're being a bit trollish about it. (Not to be racist against trolls - they must be people too, right?)

I haven't accused anyone of anything. Read my last post above; I was still adding to it when you responded. I do not consider DarkGod a racist at all, let alone a "supporter of Aryanism." I never said any such thing. I don't think you were really paying attention when you read my post, you just jumped to conclusions when you saw the word "racism," and they happen to be wrong.

I'm not trying to stir up controversy, and I don't know what "reddit" is. It just strikes me that there's an opportunity for a powerful addition to the narrative here, and a good reason to take it.

  • Highers   14 years 12 weeks ago

You're accusing darkgod of supporting aryanism. (Your words, not mine.) That's not 'ideas of how to improve the game'. You even cross-posted it to a major roguelike board which was conveniently linked on reddit moments before. You are trying to drum up controversy over a complete non-issue.

    quote:

Cornacians and Highers are explicitly defined as different types of human beings, however. Not metahuman, or demihuman, or psuedohuman. Not "Men." Human. They're people, like ourselves.

^^ So this wasn't you implying the non-human races in Tome are subhuman, despite one of them being based (however loosely) on a real group of people?

  • Highers   14 years 12 weeks ago

...You're joking. This is an elaborate joke. You know what's racist? Dwarves. Dwarfism is a condition that affects literally millions worldwide. It makes life difficult for them, as the world is simply not built for them - houses are too big, cars are too big, clothes are too big. Even a large little person is still relegated to buying clothes from the kids' aisle at Sears, a problem that has plagued, for example, Danny Devito for years. So let's get rid of dwarves. For their sake. Because you know what's more important than a rich fantasy world? Being the internet racism police.

Seriously, they're a different race. They compose an extremely small percentage of humanity, and they have latent magical ability that makes them better at most things. There's dozens of analogs to this in other games. AS you mentioned, elves in D&D. Like the high elves and the drow, which I guess don't count because they have... POINTY EARS. That completely differentiates them from humans. Nevermind that the blonde haired, blue eyed elves have been oppressing the dark skinned elves for years, driving them underground (RAILROADING THEM, IF YOU WILL) with a campaign of genocide and religious oppression because they looked different. That's OK: BECAUSE THEY'RE ELVES.

  • Let's keep serious profanity out of the blogs.   14 years 12 weeks ago

Western culture has changed quite a bit from the old days. Most people now use swear words on a daily basis, and rarely draw criticism because of it. This is because mainstream society is finally waking up to the idea that the notion of "profanity" itself is rather nonsensical.

These words are permanent parts of the English language that have evolved over thousands of years. They have etymologies and histories as long and complex as any other word you care to name. They are used by everyone at one time or another, because at the end of the day they are just words, and cannot do us any harm. Most children hear profanity every day, and sometimes even employ it themselves. They still somehow manage to grow up into productive adults all the same.

What is it, exactly, that makes swear words inherently "bad" when others that have the exact same meaning are still perfectly acceptable? It seems foolish to the point of superstition to imply that someone using such words is committing some kind of infraction against society, or that their vocabulary is somehow limited to the "potentially offensive."

If you wish to take offense from the use of some specific word that is not directed at you, that's your privilege, but keep it to yourself. Don't push others to censor their words because of your own antiquated notions of propriety.

Nope it's not an isolated incident now, sadly. Switching back and forth from ascii and oldrpg and ran into the same issue.

  • ToME won the 2011 roguelike of the year award!   14 years 13 weeks ago

It has only been a couple of days since I found out about this game, I saw a series of videos on Youtube. After my interest in roguelike-games had been awoken by "Dwarf Fortress" a few months ago, I started exploring the genre in depth. I played a good amount of them or at least got first impressions otherwise, but "Tales of Maj'Eyal" undoubtedly is one of the best I have seen so far. The only thing it is lacking for me is the randomness of the world, it becomes difficult to play through the same parts of the game over and over. But since I started out with "Dwarf Fortress" I am probably spoiled in that regard.

Overall this game does deserve to be mentioned when talking about the best of the best. But judging from my own experience, I can not be sure if the outcome of this contest has been influenced by the sheer number of players who even know a particular game. Roguelikes aren't games of the masses, so statistics can and will be deceptive.

I am getting off-road here. Just wanted to say that ToME is an awesome game, that it deserves it's place in this contest, that it is an incredible gift to be able to play it for free, that I do not care about minor things you are rewarded with by monetarily supporting this project, that I do feel bad I have not yet donated myself for all the fun I have gotten out of this game and that the terrible Internet exposes more and more people who need their noses broken by me.

Thanks for the work and effort put into this. And congratulations on being the best roguelike of 2011!

PS: I know I am late. But should I really care?

Whenever I try to use this and/or Darkwood UI it switches to the offline-profile "due to bad addon-version" -- or something along those lines. At first I thought some files were corrupted on my end, but after redownloading and double-checking everything the problem was still there, which kinda sucks because it looks like you put a lot of effort into this, and by that I mean it makes ToME look AWESOME!

Anyway, assuming this isn't just some problem on my end (and indeed, some posters in the thread seem to confirm that this isn't the case):

    Please fix this.

    Sincerely,
    Your newest fanboi

There was a blogpost with some level of profanity, but I don't see it at a quick glance. It may have been deleted.

  • Let's keep serious profanity out of the blogs.   14 years 17 weeks ago

Can anyone point me to serious profanity on this site? Because I never saw any and thus see this blog post as pretty pointless.

  • Let's keep serious profanity out of the blogs.   14 years 17 weeks ago

I can see the request, first off because I also find excessive swearing annoying after a while, and also because what if a kid happens to read a blog?

There's always a better way to word something than the swearing, think of it as a challenge if you want, a way of expanding your vocabulary beyond the potentially offensive.

If nothing else, at least keep it to what you'd hear in a PG movie rather than an R would be a great first step.

Why? What do you have against profanity? It gives languages flavour and colour.

  • Zerker - Order of Battle (slight spoilers)   14 years 18 weeks ago

Is there some general order you follow for doing your Berserker build? I can see some of your finished builds but that doesn't tell me everything. What are your priorities?

So far I'm playing Berserkers and Bulwarks but I'm definitely getting stuck in the low 20s/end of tier 2 range.

  • Tales of Maj'Eyal beta38 aka "A new beginning"   14 years 19 weeks ago

"i think the active talents would be better on the left side default, there are the other infos of the character too"
    Agreed.
    But greate release. ;)

  • Tales of Maj'Eyal beta38 aka "A new beginning"   14 years 19 weeks ago

The only complaint I have so far is that the inventory screen doesn't fully scale with my screen. It probably has to do with me being on a netbook with a 1024 x 600 resolution, but there it is.

Tough not knowing how much encumbrance I'm under!

Also the new UI is amazing if a bit big again on my netbook, but I'm used to weirdnesses so it's a very little niggle

  • Tales of Maj'Eyal beta38 aka "A new beginning"   14 years 19 weeks ago

    some feedback:
    - there's no info about the level of the arena
    - in the arena the sun paladin has no image, it is an @ (or is it a joke? :)
    - it looks like when an enemy unit has "burn(1)" it will get no more damage, so this is kinda misleading
    - the number of the shields are kinda ugly, hard to read (maybe there is an other number under them?)
    - is it intended a skeleton can be healed by the heal spell of the archmage?
    - i'd like to see the damage of the wands in the description
    - i think the active talents would be better on the left side default, there are the other infos of the character too

    WOW, great release!
(the talents levelup screen memory leak is still there and kinda annoying.)

I just had a crash and I remember using the 64-bit version of b37 was much more stable then the 32-bit one was. Are you going to release one?
