Bosses are unique hostile NPCs in Tales of Maj'Eyal. They can be divided into fixed bosses and random bosses.
Fixed bosses inhabit a particular zone, typically on the last level. They are the main (story) bosses of Tales of Maj'Eyal. They are fixed (not randomly generated) bosses. Fixed bosses are also sometimes called Guardians, a name that comes from the game's code. Defeating a fixed boss often completes or advances a quest. Guardians often drop high-quality equipment or artifacts.
There is a bosses guide that provides advice on how to defeat the fixed bosses.
Random bosses can appear in certain situations, or as regular enemies on higher difficulties. They are created by upgrading regular enemies by adding classes (typically 2 classes). They are a greater version of rares, which are randomly created by adding 1 class.

Backup Guardians
After returning from the Far East, players may find new or 'corrupted' bosses in many zones throughout the West. They are found on the same-numbered floors of their zones regardless of whether or not it is the alternate version of each zone. Backup guardians only appear if the original guardian of the zone was defeated. The existence of the backup guardians is hinted at by rumors randomly spoken by town NPCs.
