However, there are a few unlocks that are tied to achievements, which can therefore not be unlocked on Easier difficulty, as achievements cannot be earned on Easier difficulty. The affected achievements are marked on this page. Additionally, the Insane and Madness difficulties can only be unlocked by beating the game on the previous difficulty (Nightmare and Insane, respectively). |

What is unlockable and how to unlock them
Below is a list of things that are unlockable in ToME 4 and how to unlock them.
Most unlocks are unlockable on any difficulty and permadeath setting.
Those who wish to unlock all classes and races (including several 'unreleased' ones) immediately may do so by downloading zizzo's Ignore Race/Class Locks addon and adding it to their /Game/Addons folder: http://te4.org/games/addons/tome/ignore-raceclass-locks
Races
- Undead (Skeletons and Ghouls)
- Kill The Master in Dreadfell to unlock one undead subrace, selected at random. (Kill him again with a diffrerent character to unlock the other.)
- Yeek
- Rescue Yeek Wayist from Subject Z in the Ruined Halfling Complex as any race other than Halfling.
- Doomelf (Ashes of Urh'Rok DLC)
- Kill Walrog, Kryl-Feijan, and Shasshhiy'Kaish with one character.
- Walrog can randomly spawn in dungeons with water and can be forced to spawn by completing the quest given by boss dragon to kill boss naga, then killing boss dragon after. They can be found in the Eastern water dungeons (the Flooded Cave and the Temple of Creation).
- Kryl-Feijan can be found by entering the Dark Crypt (World map event, 25+) and letting Melinda be sacrificed.
- Shasshhiy'Kaish is summoned through a random event. This event has cultists standing next to monoliths, and killing one will start the countdown to her arrival. This event can be found in Daikara, Mark of the Spellblaze, Elven Ruins, Reknor, and the Infinite Dungeon and has on average a ~72% chance to be found on a run (ignoring ID).
- This unlock is tied to the achievement The Old Ones and thus cannot be obtained on Easier mode.
- Kill Walrog, Kryl-Feijan, and Shasshhiy'Kaish with one character.
- Ogre
- Find Director Hompalan on the third floor of the Ruined Halfling Complex. He only appears if the Old Conclave Vault has been chosen to appear this game. In each game, only one out of Dogroth Caldera, the Sludgenest, the Old Conclave Vault, and (if Forbidden Cults is enabled) the Scourged Pits will appear. This is chosen randomly, unless you are a Shalore and have not yet unlocked Ogres, in which case the Old Conclave Vault will always be chosen. He will drop lore titled "order for Director Hompalan". This will reveal the Old Conclave Vault on the world map to the south east.
- Enter the Old Conclave Vault. This dungeon scales from levels 20 to 30. Find Healer Astelrid on the 4th floor, kill her, and collect the lore she drops to unlock Ogres.
- Yeti (Embers of Rage DLC)
- Use all 8 charges on the Yeti Mind Controller
- Whitehoof (Embers of Rage DLC)
- Defeat Nektosh the One-Horned in Krimbul Territory
- Drem (Forbidden Cults DLC)
- Find the Occult Egress and use the code from Kroshkkur (Demented starter zone) to create a portal to Dremshor Tunnels. Defeat the boss of the dungeon, The Amalgamation, to unlock Drem.
- Krog (Forbidden Cults DLC)
- Quest in Last Hope with a level 17+ Antimagic Character. Ogre must be unlocked to receive the quest. All four captive Krogs must survive.
Classes
- Adventurer (Adventurer meta class)
- Complete any story campaign - either "Maj'Eyal: the Age of Ascendancy" or "Embers of Rage". Note that completing Embers will unlock it in the main campaign, but will not unlock it in Embers itself unless you have already defeated the Internment Camp three times to unlock all main-campaign classes in Embers.
- Annihilator (Tinker meta class)
- To unlock in Embers of Rage, learn to tinker, then destroy a greater or ultimate hethugoroth (steam elemental), mecharachnid flame thrower, and one of the Automated Defense Systems of the Steam Quarry.
- To use in the classic Age of Ascendancy, Infinite Dungeon, and Arena campaign(s) defeat Outpost Leader John with any two (2) tinker classes.
- Anorithil (Celestial meta class)
- Kill Krogar and save Fillarel in the Unremarkable Cave in the Far East.

- Win the arena fight in the Hidden Compound (bring 150 gold).
- Corruptor (Defiler meta class)
- Complete the quest "The fall of Zigur" which starts in Mark of the Spellblaze as a magic user. (Requires at least 10 points in spell talents, which use any of: Paradox, Mana, Vim, Positive, or Negative.)
- Cultist of Entropy (Demented meta class)
- Find and read the Artifact Book: Forbidden Tome: "The Day It Came", and complete the lessons. (Random Drop.)
- Cursed (Afflicted meta class)
- Complete the quest "The beast within" which starts on the world map north of Last Hope.
- Demonologist (Defiler meta class) (Ashes of Urh'Rok DLC)
- Start in Searing Halls. You can do this as a Doomelf or as a non-undead Doombringer.
- Beginning at level 18 you have a chance to be re-abducted by the demons each time you use your Rod of Recall, bringing you to the Anteroom of Agony. Witnessing the zone boss, Rogroth, Eater of Souls revive something as a husk will complete the unlock.
- The chance of this happening when you recall is 15% at level 18 and scales to 90% at level 27.
- Doomed (Afflicted meta class)
- Kill your own shade in the Shadow Crypt in the Far East.
- Gunslinger (Tinker meta class)
- Automatically unlocked in Embers of Rage.
- To use in the classic Age of Ascendancy, Infinite Dungeon, and Arena campaign(s) defeat Outpost Leader John with any two (2) tinker classes.
- Marauder (Rogue meta class)
- Do over 600 damage in one hit as a Rogue or Shadowblade. Counts only for individual components of damage, not total damage.
- This unlock is tied to an achievement and thus cannot be obtained on Easier mode.
- Mindslayer (Psionic meta class)
- Rescue Yeek Wayist from Subject Z in the Ruined halfling complex as a Yeek.
- Necromancer (Mage meta class)
- Kill the necromancer Celia in the Last Hope Graveyard after reading all 4 parts of the lore "How to become a necromancer".
- Oozemancer (Wilder meta class)
- Find the Sludgenest and defeat the Corrupted Oozemancer. Note that in each game, only one out of Dogroth Caldera, the Sludgenest, the Old Conclave Vault, and (if Forbidden Cults is enabled) the Scourged Pits will appear. This is chosen randomly, unless you are a Thalore and have not yet unlocked Oozemancer, in which case the Sludgenest will always be chosen.
- Paradox Mage (Chronomancer meta class)
- Get "killed" by your future self in Daikara, playing as a Temporal Warden.
- When your future self kills you, because of the grandfather paradox that your death would cause, your future self dies instead of you, and you survive with 30% health remaining.
- Note: if you just press '5' and wait for your future self to win the fight you will miss out on an artifact bow that goes well with Temporal Warden. You can bring your future self down to half health, defeat the optional boss and then get defeated by your future self if you want said artifact bow.
- Watch out for your future self's Sever Lifeline attack, which can instantly kill you (ending the fight before you get to encounter Epoch) if you remain in their line of sight.
- Get "killed" by your future self in Daikara, playing as a Temporal Warden.
- Psyshot (Tinker meta class)
- To unlock in Embers of Rage, explore the old ruins in the Eruan desert after you have completed the You Shall Pass! quest, and hand in the first yeti tissue sample to the Old Psi-Machine as part of the Mystery of the Yetis quest.
- To use in the classic Age of Ascendancy, Infinite Dungeon, and Arena campaign(s) defeat Outpost Leader John with any two (2) tinker classes.
- Reaver (Defiler meta class)
- Kill 1,000 humanoids (counts over multiple games). You can check the progress of this unlock under the Reaver achievement.
- This unlock is tied to an achievement and thus cannot be obtained on Easier mode.
- Sawbutcher (Tinker meta class)
- Automatically unlocked in Embers of Rage.
- To use in the classic Age of Ascendancy, Infinite Dungeon, and Arena campaign(s) defeat Outpost Leader John with any two (2) tinker classes.
- Skirmisher (Rogue meta class)
- Counterstrike an enemy from a distance of 5 or more squares away. Can be achieved by blocking a ranged attack then shooting the attacker, blocking up close and quickly getting far enough away to then shoot, or many other methods. Using Rush will not work as you are no longer the required number of squares away when you strike. Note: It can also be unlocked because an enemy fulfilled the condition, without you having to do anything - this is probably a bug.
- Solipsist (Psionic meta class)
- Complete both dreams in Dogroth Caldera, either by timer or by using the altar. Note that in each game, only one out of Dogroth Caldera, Sludgenest, the Old Conclave Vault, and (if Forbidden Cults is enabled) the Scourged Pits will appear. This is chosen randomly, unless you are a Yeek and have not yet unlocked Solipsist, in which case Dogroth Caldera will always be chosen.
- This unlock is tied to an achievement and thus cannot be obtained on Easier mode.
- Stone Warden (Wilder meta class)
- Summoner (Wilder meta class)
- See a character use the talent Summon (Honey Tree in Trollmire / Old Forest is your earliest bet). Other summoning talents do not count.

- Complete the quest "Eight legs of wonder" which starts in the Gates of Morning in the Far East.
- Temporal Warden (Chronomancer meta class)
- Complete the quest "Back and Back and Back To The Future" which starts in Daikara 3 (specifically the Temporal Rift).
- Wanderer (Adventurer meta class)
- Exit from Ukruk the Fierce's Ambush. It doesn't matter whether you defeat Ukruk or lose to him.
- Wyrmic (Wilder meta class)
- Slay the Sandworm Queen in the Sandworm Lair and eat her heart. The corrupted version does not work for this unlock.
- All non-Tinker, non-Warrior classes in Embers of Rage
- Initially, you will only be able to create Tinkers and Warriors in Orcs: Embers of Rage. The first time you complete the Internment Camp, you will randomly either unlock the Mage or Rogue metaclass for use in Embers of Rage. (You can play as the classes from that metaclass that you have already unlocked in the main ToME campaign, as well as ones you unlock in the future.) The next time you complete it on a new character, you will unlock the other metaclass out of Mage and Rogue. The third time you complete it on a new character, you will unlock all the metaclasses (that you have unlocked in the main campaign) for use in Embers of Rage.
Class Evolutions
- Avatar of a Distant Sun (Sun Paladin class evolution)
- As a Sun Paladin, there is a 1/5 chance to unlock every turn you are in combat in a zone that is in orbit.
- Eligible zones are the Fearscape, the Fearscape (Tannen), an Orbital Fearscape Platform, the Searing Halls, and the Anteroom of Agony. The Abashed Expanse would count, but a Sun Paladin cannot visit it.
- When the unlock condition is fulfilled, you will have a conversation with the Distant Sun, who will then deal 5000 Fire damage to all enemies within 200 range of you, and the class evolution will be unlocked. Once the class evolution is unlocked, this cannot be triggered again.
- As a Sun Paladin, there is a 1/5 chance to unlock every turn you are in combat in a zone that is in orbit.
- Fallen (Sun Paladin class evolution)
- Do any of the following: Kill a hate-using enemy while having the Sun's Vengeance buff from the Sun's Vengeance talent OR As a Sun Paladin, sacrifice High Sun Paladin Aeryn (in the Age of Ascendancy campaign) OR As a Sun Paladin, destroy Crimson Templar John (in the Embers of Rage campaign).
- It can also be unlocked because another character killed a hate-using enemy while having the Sun's Vengeance buff. This is possibly a bug.
- Each Paladin who wants to take the evolution in the Age of Ascendancy campaign will have to commit at least one heinous act: siding with the Grand Corruptor to destroy Zigur, winning the fight in the Ring of Blood, killing your own escort, letting every lumberjack die, letting Melinda be sacrificed, or starting the Trapped! quest but not saving the merchant.
- High Thaumaturgist (Archmage class evolution)
- As an Archmage, kill a level 10+ Boss using only "beam" talents.
- Technomancer (Archmage class evolution)
- As an Archmage, be at least level 10, and have at least 16 generic points put into talents in the Physics and Chemistry talent categories, then craft tinkers until you get the unlock. After meeting the conditions, each time you craft a tinker, you have a chance to unlock Technomancer. The chance is 10%, except when crafting a Mana Coil, in which case the chance is 50%.
- This can be done in the main campaign, but you'll have to luck into a tinker escort to do it.
- In the Embers of Rage campaign, these categories are purchasable with gold from the start in Kruk Pride.
- As an Archmage, be at least level 10, and have at least 16 generic points put into talents in the Physics and Chemistry talent categories, then craft tinkers until you get the unlock. Cosmetic Options
Cosmetic options can be chosen by pressing the "Customize" button when creating a new character. You must be a donator to use cosmetic customization. The following unlocks add extra cosmetic options. Unlockable class features are also chosen via the Customize button, so they are also donator-only, but they are counted as "other" unlocks instead of "cosmetic" when counting unlocked options on the Character Creation screen. Unlike other cosmetic options, class features have gameplay impacts.

- Female Dwarf Beards

- Find and read the Artifact Book: Forbidden Tome: "The Illusory Castle" as an Alchemist, and defeat The Glass Golem in the Illusory Castle, to unlock the Glass Golem birth option.
Achievement-locked Prodigies
These Prodigies each require a certain achievement to have been achieved. These Prodigies will only be unlocked for the difficulty and permadeath setting where their required achievement was earned, unlike other unlocks, which can be used on other settings than they were unlocked on. (If an achievement is earned on a difficulty and permadeath setting, it will also be earned on all combinations of equal or lower difficulty and permadeath settings.)
These unlocks are implemented differently than other unlocks, so they are not counted in the unlocks count on the character creation screen.
- Arcane Amplification Drone (Embers of Rage DLC)
